Benchmark Old No. 8

Day 20: Benchmark Old No. 8

For Day Twenty of the 30 Days of Bourbon, I’m taking a step back from the single barrels, allocated bottles, and limited releases to highlight a bourbon that’s all about value and consistency—Benchmark Old No. 8. Working at the bar tonight, this is the bourbon I’ll be pouring as the well option, and it’s a great reminder that you don’t always need a fancy label or a high price tag to enjoy a good pour.

Benchmark Old No. 8 comes from the Buffalo Trace Distillery, using the same high-corn mash bill as some of their more renowned offerings like Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, and George T. Stagg. While it might not have the complexity of its more expensive siblings, Benchmark brings a straightforward, solid bourbon experience that’s perfect for sipping or mixing. It’s also a testament to Buffalo Trace’s ability to produce quality whiskey across different price points.

What makes Benchmark stand out is its value. In a world where bourbon prices can sometimes get out of hand, it’s refreshing to have a bottle you can pick up for around $15. It’s a budget-friendly bourbon that delivers on flavor without breaking the bank. On the nose, you get light aromas of caramel, vanilla, and oak, with a hint of corn sweetness. The palate is smooth and sweet, with flavors of caramel and vanilla coming through, and a touch of fruit and spice. The finish is short to medium, with a light warmth and just enough oak and spice to keep things interesting.

Choosing Benchmark Old No. 8 for today is a reminder of the accessibility and versatility of bourbon. Not every bottle needs to be a rare find or a special release to be appreciated. Sometimes, the best choice is the one that’s right in front of you, reliable and easygoing, whether you’re sipping it neat, on the rocks, or mixing up a classic cocktail.

So, here’s to the value bourbons like Benchmark Old No. 8, proving that quality and affordability can go hand in hand. It’s a solid pour that deserves a spot on the shelf, especially for those moments when you just want a good, simple bourbon without any fuss.
