Tonight, I’m choosing from a few special Angel’s Envy expressions—one of the distilleries well-known for their barrel finishing expertise.
For Day 27 of the 30 Days of Bourbon, my pour is Angel’s Envy Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish. Angel’s Envy has built its reputation on the mastery of finishing bourbon in non-traditional barrels, and this expression is a perfect example of their craft. While their classic port finish is iconic, the Oloroso Sherry finish adds a different layer of complexity.
Angel’s Envy was founded in 2010 by Lincoln Henderson, a Bourbon Hall of Fame master distiller who made his mark on the whiskey industry with his innovative finishing techniques. The name “Angel’s Envy” refers to the “angel’s share”—the portion of whiskey lost to evaporation during aging. The envy? What the angels are missing out on, according to Henderson’s son, Wes, who now continues the family legacy. From its inception, Angel’s Envy has pushed boundaries by introducing port and other barrel finishes, creating a refined and sophisticated portfolio of whiskeys.
Tonight’s Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish starts with a nose full of dried fruits—raisins, figs—and roasted nuts, balanced by dark chocolate. The palate is equally rich, blending caramel, dried fruit, and baking spices, enhanced by the deep influence of the sherry cask. The finish is long, velvety, and nutty, with a warm sweetness that lingers.
This pour exemplifies what Angel’s Envy does best—bringing out layers of complexity in bourbon through thoughtful, well-executed barrel finishes. The Oloroso Sherry finish is a standout expression for anyone looking to expand their bourbon palate and enjoy something truly special.
