Today it rained. All day. So I didn’t ride. So I visited RD1 Spirits in Lexington, where I took part in their “Bottle Your Own Straight From The Barrel” experience. After sampling both the Rum and Port finishes from single barrels at the distillery, I found the Port Finish to be the real standout. The depth and complexity it offered was truly impressive, which is why I took home a bottle of this unique bourbon. In honor of the rained-out Bourbon Country Burn event that I was supposed to ride in today, I dubbed this bottle the “Bourbon Country Burn Barrel” and make it my official Day 28 pour.
RD1 is a distillery that blends the best of Kentucky’s rich bourbon history with a forward-thinking approach to barrel finishing. As they transition from their WM Tarr roots to their RD1 label, they’re committed to creating a lineup of unique, well-crafted bourbons that reflect both tradition and innovation.
The Port Finish is a perfect example of this ethos. RD1 takes its classic Kentucky straight bourbon and gives it a second life in port wine barrels. The influence of the port cask brings an added layer of dark fruit, such as plums and cherries, while complementing the traditional bourbon notes of caramel, vanilla, and oak. The result is a bourbon that’s as rich in flavor as it is in character.
On the nose, you’ll immediately pick up those dark, fruity aromas, along with a touch of spice. The palate is where the port really shines, offering a lush mix of red berries, dark chocolate, and a slight tannic quality from the wine barrels. The finish is long and smooth, with the port’s sweetness balanced beautifully by the bourbon’s warmth.
RD1 Spirits is quickly making a name for itself by focusing on unique finishes like this one, and if you’re a fan of bourbons with a twist, this one should be on your radar.
