Buffalo Trace

Day 4: Buffalo Trace

Buffalo Trace holds a special place in my bourbon journey—it was my introduction to bourbon over a decade ago, and today it’s the focus for day four of my 30 Days of Bourbon. With more than 200 years of history, it’s a legacy brand known for its smooth, balanced whiskey, perfect for both new bourbon drinkers and veterans alike. While I’ve since moved on to craft distilleries, Buffalo Trace remains a solid choice, especially when I’m making Old Fashioneds at the bar.

This bottle found its way into my collection thanks to my son. He asked if I could track down a bottle of Buffalo Trace for a friend of his who’s a big fan. Of course, it’s not as easy to find as it was when I first started drinking it all those years ago, but when one of my favorite liquor stores announced a single barrel release, I didn’t hesitate. I grabbed one for his friend and, naturally, one for myself—after all, I’m a sucker for a good single barrel.

While I don’t return to Buffalo Trace as often these days, this single barrel serves as a reminder of why it’s still so popular. The balance, smoothness, and craftsmanship are evident, and the unique character of single barrels keeps me coming back to these releases, even if legacy brands aren’t my usual go-to anymore.
